Små toppers til hundens måltid – variation & ekstra næring

Small toppers for your dog's meal – variety & extra nutrition

Small toppers for your dog's meal – variety & extra nutrition

I often use small, natural toppers in my dog's food bowl. It's a simple way to add variety to the meal and provide extra nutrients. For many dogs, it can also make mealtime a little more exciting.

However, it's important to remember that toppers are just a supplement. They should always be given on top of a balanced complete food, which still constitutes the main part of the dog's diet. Toppers should be seen as a small extra layer of nutrition – not as something that replaces regular feeding.

Here are some of the toppers I often use in my dog's diet:

Kelp (seaweed)

Kelp is a type of seaweed that is naturally rich in minerals and trace elements, including iodine, which plays a role in metabolism. Seaweed also contains small amounts of vitamins and antioxidants.
However, it is an ingredient that should always be used in very small quantities, as the iodine content can be high.

Sardines

Sardines are a fantastic natural source of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help support skin, coat, and joints. They also contain high-quality protein and vitamin D.
I typically use sardines in water or their own juice and give them as a small topper on top of the food.

Eggs (lightly cooked)

Eggs are a nutrient-rich topper and contain protein of high biological value as well as a range of important vitamins such as A, D, and B vitamins.
I usually give eggs lightly cooked for about 6 minutes, so both the egg white and yolk still retain many of their nutrients, while being easy for the dog to digest.

Green-lipped mussel

Green-lipped mussel is especially known for its content of omega-3 fatty acids and natural joint nutrients such as glucosamine and glycosaminoglycans.
Therefore, it is often used as a natural supplement to support joints and mobility, especially in active or older dogs.

Kiwi

Kiwi can be an exciting little fruit topper in very small quantities. It contains fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, which can contribute to healthy digestion.
I only give small pieces at a time and make sure to remove the peel.

Kefir

Kefir is a fermented milk product that contains natural probiotic bacteria. These can help support a healthy gut flora and digestion in some dogs.
It is best given in small amounts, especially if the dog is not used to fermented products.

Remember the balance

Variety can be healthy, but quantity matters. Toppers should only make up a small part of the dog's overall diet.

If you want to start using toppers, it's a good idea to:

  • introduce new foods gradually

  • monitor how your dog reacts

  • adjust the amount according to your dog's size, activity level, and needs

In this way, toppers can be a simple and natural way to add a little extra variety and nutrition to your dog's daily meals.
